1-6 First Use

Hell Gate.

As a sorcerer, my village has been in charge of it for generations. At the end of the Hell Gate, the flames of hell burn, and a sacrifice must be made once every hundred years to keep the flames alive.

Having no family, I volunteered for the sacrifice.

It seems that it has to be young flesh and blood, and luckily I'm single with no family. No one objected when I came forward to sacrifice myself, and I think the kids of my generation were somewhat relieved.

The teacher was the only one who objected. But... in the end, he relented.

The only person who cried for me was the teacher.

I sacrificed myself.

My flesh burned, my soul burned...and never did.

For some reason, my soul did not burn. On the contrary, my soul consumed the flames of hell.

I feed the eight-coloured flames with my soul, and the white flames recreate my body, and when I woke up... well, a thousand years have passed, and my village has been abandoned.

Strangely enough, I felt no sadness when I saw the abandoned village.

I tried to sacrifice myself for my village, but I died. Then, I, who survived the hellfire... this time, I'm determined to live for myself.

First, I decided to go on a trip to learn about the world outside the village.

When I walked out of the village and into the forest, I met Primavera, the princess of a huge country called the White Pearl Kingdom. Also known as Prim, and her knight, Aishera.

To make a long story short, Prim is the seventh in line to the throne of the White Pearl Kingdom. She left the country because she didn't want to fight for the throne, but she was attacked by her brother or sister who wanted the throne.

In the meantime, I fought off the bad guys with [Curse Fighting Arts] a combination of magic and martial arts that I learned from my teacher. At Prim's request, I decided to become a guard for these two.

[TN: I’ve been calling it curse fighting for now. 呪闘技 but if someone has a better word for it, please leave in the comments.]

The goal is to reach the Blue Sapphire Kingdom in the west.

It seems to be an isolated island in the sea. I've never seen a Sea before. It's going to be a fun trip. But... it's not going to be that easy, is it? It's not that easy.

Me, Prim, and Aishera's journey... we were already facing hardships.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

We arrived at the village that Aishera mentioned. When we went to the inn, there was some trouble.

Aishera started to argue with the old man at the reception desk. He told her not to stay at the hotel and to get out.

Prim sat down, tired of walking, and I was impressed by the first civilization I'd seen outside of my hometown.

“Hey, why not! I said I'll pay you!”

“Sorry. I want no trouble... so leave.”

“What do you mean "trouble"? What kind of trouble?”

“You know, it's funny to see, isn't it? A female knight in silver gleaming armor, a girl in a frilly dress, and a normal guy.”

“Wh-What's so funny…?”

“You know, the princess, the knight, and the boy who saved her life and hired him as a bodyguard. You don't have a lot of luggage, and I'm guessing this is the village you fled to after being attacked.”

“I-I d-d-don’t know what y-you’re talking a-about… this isn’t the p-p-princess…!! The princess is…”

“……You're a hard-nosed lady knight who can't lie. Watch out for orcs.”

“Wh-wh-wh-wh--”

The old man at the reception desk waved his hand shooingly.

I don't know, but I do know that Aishera looks very stupid. She comes back with her shoulders slumped.

“I guess we'll just have to stay out here.”

“Oh, shut up! I'm sorry, Princess...”

“No… It can't be helped.”

“…It can't be helped.”

I asked the old man at the inn about it.

“Hey, old man. Can you at least share the food with me? I won't cause you any trouble.”

“...can't help it. I'll at least make you a lunch.”

“Thank you! Also, is there a store that sells normal clothes? Something that would look good on those two.”

“Uh...I think the tool store had it.”

“Okay, okay. Thank you! Aishera, money, money! You should thank me!”

“You bastard! Without even asking!”

"Aishera. Pay"

“…Yes, ma'am.”

I asked the innkeeper to make me lunch and gave me three unused blankets as a favour.

We were told that there was a small cave just outside the village, so we decided to sleep there tonight.

“Prim, can you walk?”

“……”

“All right. Come on, let's get you on my back.”

“What, what, what!?”

“You! You're going to enjoy the Princess's breasts with your back! You know I can't do that because I'm wearing armor... unacceptable!”

“Aishera, die.”

“Ugh... huh. I'll take care of the princess.”

“Flare, it's... I will be in your care.”

“Sure”

“You guys, do me a favour and take it outside...”

The old man at the inn glared at us and we headed out of the village.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

A few minutes after leaving the village, we arrived at the cave we were looking for.

It's a cave with very little depth. I think we'll be fine here for a day or so.

I picked up some firewood and took out my charm.

“[Burn it Atchichi]”

[TN: These spell names… -_-]

The charm burns and the wood burns.

I laid the blanket on the ground and sat Prim down.

She seemed to be very tired and was about to fall asleep as if she was out of it.

“Prim, if you're going to sleep, you should eat and go to bed.”

“Yes…”

“Aishera, you're tired, too.”

“It's no big deal. I train differently than most people around here.”

“I see. The old man at the inn said that you should do something about your armour and clothes. It's really noticeable.”

Aishera is in silver armour gear, and Prim is in a dress that looks hard to walk in.

In the village, she stood out very much, and I think this dress made Prim even more tired from walking.

“You want me to take off the 'Holy Silver Armour' given to me by the Princess? Don't be silly, this is holy armour that only the princess can take off. One day I will take this armour by the hands of the Princess...”

“All right. Flare, please act as my escort... tomorrow, could you go to the village and buy clothes for me and Aishera?”

“No problem. I want to learn how to spend money, too.”

“fufu…”

Aishera seems tired after all.

Although she doesn't show it in her attitude, Aishera also looks pale.

After they ate, they fell asleep in no time at all. Prim leaned on Aishera and Aishera fell asleep giggling.

I've trained with my teacher for seven days without sleep, and there's no way I couldn't stay up all night. Watching is the job of the guards.

"Oh, that's right."

I forgot one important thing... they're asleep, so I guess I'll just do it on my own.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

The next day. I go to the village by myself.

I took Prim and Aishera's dresses and armor and wrapped them in blankets. Prim looked embarrassed with the blanket wrapped around her body, and Aishera was spreading a stiff killing intent, so let's quickly buy some clothes and go back.

The village tool shop was located across the street from the inn.

“Hello!”

“Hmm… welcome.”

It looks like a one-woman store run by an old lady.

I looked around the store and saw many interesting things. There are machetes, sickles, pots and knives, all the things you need for daily life. They also have a little armour, weapons, clothes, and underwear.

“You, weren’t you the one making all that noise in the inn yesterday.”

“Ah, so you knew…haha”

“Damn it. We don't have clothes that young girls wear. If you want trendy clothes that princesses and knights wear, head west to the city.”

“There's a town to the west? Wow... that's exciting.”

“…You, are you traveling without knowing what you're doing?”

“Haha. I'm from the countryside... oh, that's right. Is this a ‘Trade’? And please give me some money!”

"……Good grief"

As I placed the dress and armour in front of her, she gazed at them sullenly.

“I can't buy this.”

“Yeah”

“This is mithril holy silver. Twenty white gold coins won't be enough if you try to buy something like this.”

“Uh, ‘White gold’? What does that mean?”

“...you don't look like you're lying.”

“Well, I'm from the country, so I don't know much about money.”

“...I can't afford something this fine. That's it.”

“Well... what if it's not fine, then?”

"What?"

I grabbed the armour and patted it down, then punched it between my fists with both hands. The armour crumpled and could no longer be called armour.

“Ouch, how about this? It's damaged, and it's cheaper.”

“Are you stupid?”

“Yeah”

“Kukuku… You're a funny kid. Yes, I'll buy it if it's damaged. I'll buy it for a hundred gold pieces, along with that dirty dress of yours.”

“Yes! So, what's a ‘Big Gold’?”

“They say stupid kids are cute... so I'll teach you a little about money. And you'll be traveling, right? I'll help you find the right tools.”

“Oh! Thank you, Grandma!”

“Hmm”

Grandmother fixed some pots, knives, dishes for the three of us, underwear, and clothes.

She packed the tools into a large bag and pulled out an old-fashioned box.

“What is that?”

“...you're armed with your bare hands...or is that martial arts?”

“Oh, you know?”

“Yeah. The way you stand, the way your muscles are. But that's not enough.”

“?”

“Take it. It's a service.”

When I opened the box, there was a small gauntlet inside.

"…what's this?"

“This is a weapon that I used when I was younger. I used to be a martial artist too... but I had a lot of hidden weapons that I used to pretend were only for martial arts. This is one of them. A two-handed pop-up knife.”

"Oh, cool"

I take off my teacher's grub, put Grandma's pop-up knife on my arm, and equip my teacher's grub on top of it. It's quite light and sturdy and doesn't feel heavy.

I twisted my wrist upward, and the blade flew out.

"Wow!"

“You've got to have a few tricks up your sleeve. You never know what will be your trump card on the battlefield.”

“Yes! Thank you so much!”

I thanked her and left the store.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

“Hey, I'm back!”

“Oh, Flare!”

“Hmm, looks like you can at least shop.”

I unloaded my luggage and tried to get a change of clothes and underwear out from inside, but Aishera hit me.

“Ouch… what’re you doing?”

“Come on, you idiot. How dare a man offer me the underwear I'm about to wear!”

"No, it's the one I bought..."

“Enough, go over there!!”

As I turned around, I heard a rustling sound.

Prim said, having finished getting dressed.

“Flare.”

"Hmm, oh. Is it over?"

“Yes, that's Flare. The size is perfect.”

"Hmm. That's okay."

Good. I measured you last night, and it fits perfectly.

Prim’s is a shirt, skirt, and boots for ease of movement.

Aishera is wearing a shirt and pants. She has a sword in her belt.

“I got my travel gear sorted out. Now we can go to the next town. Oh, I'll give you back the rest of your money... what's wrong?”

““……””

"Hey?"

"Hey, you... what did you say?"

"Eh? Look over the travel tools."

"No... Before that."

“Before that? Uh...yeah, the one where I measured you last night. What about it?”

““……””

I'm scared.

I wonder what's going on. It’s silent all of a sudden.

"Huh, flare ... what did you measure?"

“What? Size. I measured them both last night while you guys were sleeping. You're going to be so picky if your clothes don't fit. I took off your clothes and measured your whole body, so it fits perfectly, right? The tool shop’s grandmother must have some pretty good sewing skills!”

““……””

Aishera silently draws her sword and Prim's eyes lose their glow.

“What? Um? What's wrong?”

“You bastard… did you see? Me and the princess naked!”

“Um, yeah”

“I’ll kill youuuuuuuuuuuu!”

“Yes? Wait, why? Hey, Prim!”

"Flare, please die"

"Why!?"

It doesn't make much difference whether a man or a woman is naked. In my hometown, men and women bathed and changed clothes together. When I told them that, they got really angry.

What is this? Is it my fault?

◇◇◇◇◇◇

“Hey, you... you gave it to that kid?”

“Yeah. He's a funny kid. I'm sure he'll make good use of my armour.”

“Well, well... that's not a weapon, it's a dark weapon. I'm sure it's the last thing you remember about yourself, the woman who was once known as the strongest female assassin.”

“I don't care. It's no use putting them in the grave of an old lady who's going to die in a few years. Anyway, innkeeper, why didn't you let them stay?”

“Ho, that's obvious. I mean, didn't you notice?”

"...?"

“The three of them are being followed by someone. And they're pretty good at it.”

"Hmm..."

“I don't want war in my village. I can't let them destroy the safe haven I've finally found.”

The old man of the innkeeper and the old woman of the toolmaker puffed on their pipes together.

9 - Princess Knight and grilled meat

At night, in the camper, the wind chimes ringing on the porch.

Naoto sat there, relaxing.

Mimi was sleeping in the loft, where the ceiling had been raised, and the puppy was in the mandarin orange box in place.

Sofia was not in the car, but far ahead of Naoto's gaze, her burning hair blending into the other world of the night, becoming part of the landscape, like the moon reflected on the surface of the water.

“Maybe I should go get her... no, I shouldn't.”

He thought for a moment about moving the car, but glanced at the interior and decided against it.

Trained by the crowded trains of his corporate life, Naoto has a body that can sleep soundly no matter how bumpy the car is, but he doesn't know if the half-elf girl is the same.

Since she was sleeping so comfortably, he decided to try not to wake her up.

So he waited for a while without doing anything, and the glow of the burning hair in his eyes disappeared. After waiting for a while more, Sophia came back.

She was dragging something in her hand.

“I'm back, Naoto.”

“What is that?”

“It's the tail of a dinosaur.”

“The tail of a dinosaur?”

"A different dinosaur"

"dinosaur·"

"Dinosaur"

"Dinosaur"

[TN: They’re both saying it different. Sophia is calling it a 恐竜 (Kyōryū) and Naoto is calling it a きょうりゅう (kyō ryū)'. In the last one, she says it just like Naoto.]

Naoto and Sofia repeat the same words even though they are being told differently.

To Naoto's ears, it sounded like the same pronunciation, only with a subtle difference in accent.

I wonder if there is something there. As he thought this, Sofia explained to him.

“The fearsome dragon Shielius, a dragon known for its extremely timid nature, inhabits this area.”

“Oh, you mean fearful dragon.”

“It's famous for cutting off its own tail when it senses danger, attracting the attention of its opponents and fleeing while it does so.”

“It's like a lizard.”

“I threatened him a bit. That's enough to last us a few days.”

“Yeah.”

Naoto nods to Sophia, who points to the tail.

Just a few minutes ago, Naoto told her that the contents of the refrigerator were getting low, so she went to get them for them.

“But is it any good?”

“It's pretty good, fits most cooking methods, but it's especially good when grilled.”

“All right, let's cook it up a little.”

“You're cooking it now?”

“I'm in the mood for a midnight snack.”

“Oh, well, that's all right.”

Sophia nodded and said she would make a fire, gathering dead wood and leaves from around her. She held out her hand toward it, her hair burning, and lit it with magic.

“That's convenient.”

“I resent that you call it convenient. It's a royal secret.”

“Oh, I'm sorry.”

Naoto apologized honestly.

In the meantime, the fire she had lit had flared up all at once.

Naoto felt excited, as if he were lighting a bonfire in his own yard.

Suddenly, he remembered something.

“Sophia, the meat from that tail tastes best when it's grilled, doesn't it?”

“Yes, as far as I know, it does.”

“It could be made into Stone Age primitive meat but... let's go with that.”

“That?”

“Hold on a second.”

He got up, leaving Sophia to wonder, went back into the car, filled a pot with water in the sink, and came back with it.

He threw it on the ground away from the bonfire, where there was no grass, only soil.

He kneaded up the mud there, which had become muddy, as if preparing to build a castle on the beach.

“What are you going to do with it?”

“You'll see. Yes, can you cut the tail into pieces? Cut it into rounds about two fists' width.”

“Like this?”

With her flaming hair out, she made a flaming sword at the tip of her finger and cut the tail in a snap.

It turned into a lump of meat, just as Naoto had ordered.

“You casually used an amazing technique.”

“Not really.”

Sophia responded to the compliment without hesitation, but Naoto did not miss the momentary blush on her face.

He didn't miss it, but he didn’t dare to point it out.

He took the slice of tail that Sophia had cut off and smeared it with mud.

Applying a full coating, being especially careful on the scales.

After a while, the rings of the tail turned into chunks of mud.

“Naoto? What are you going to do with it?”

“I'll do this.”

Naoto then placed a chunk of mud in the middle of the fire.

He folded his arms and stared at the flames.

“And then what?”

“Just this.”

“What?”

Sophia's eyes widen in surprise.

“This is all you have to do?”

“Yeah, it's all right.”

“That's not... cooking.”

“……”

Naoto didn't say anything back with a faint smile on his face.

Sophia looked worried when he didn't say anything, but seeing Naoto's confident look, she decided to wait and see.

And for a while, they stared at the bonfire and the mass of mud in its centre.

The fire burned the surface, which caused the water to drain away and the colour of the mud to gradually lighten, eventually turning to a charred black.

"It's about time"

Gradually, the fire became smaller and smaller, and eventually went out. Naoto picked up a piece of dead wood and poked at the smouldering embers of the fire.

When they avoided the ashes, a completely blackened mass of mud was revealed.

The smell of burning stung the nose.

“Isn't that already inedible?”

“You'll see.”

Naoto used his feet to push the hot chunks of mud out of the bonfire. He then picked up a fist-sized stone lying at his feet and carefully tapped it against the mass of mud.

Clack, clack. With a careful hand, as if cracking an egg, he struck it with a dull sound.

Eventually, the baked mud cracked open.

“Ohhhh...”

Instantly, the fragrant scent of gravy, which had been trapped in the mud, spread throughout the area.

The smell of meat, to the point of violence.

When Sophia smelled it, she was instantly entranced.

Next to him, Naoto's mouth was occupied by overflowing saliva, even though he was the one who made it and had expected it.

“I see. This looks delicious.”

As he said this, he became even more cautious and peeled off the hardened mud skin from the baking.

Naoto carefully peeled off the mud.

“Hey, Naoto! What the hell is that?”

“Have you ever roasted a potato over a bonfire? It's the same way. When I was a kid, I tried to make a baked potato, but we didn't have any aluminium foil, so I tried wrapping it in mud instead... I guess it worked better than aluminium foil. See?”

Naoto then showed Sophia a piece of the mud he had peeled off.

“You see those scales here? When you use sticky mud, it not only traps the fragrance, but when you peel it off, the scales and skin stick together like this.”

“Oh, I see!”

“Most things that are good for baking and need to be peeled will work this way. In simple terms, it's steaming. If it's a fish, don't scale it at all, just take out the guts and stuff them with green onions and ginger to make it even better.”

“But won't the whole thing get burnt if we throw it in?”

“Even then, the burnt bits stick to the mud and come off with it. No problem.”

“Oh, yeah?”

Sophia could not contain her surprise. She stared at the roasted meat and then salivated.

“Haha. Now it's peeled.”

Naoto brought out a knife and a plate and cut up the grilled meat, placing it on the plate and handing it to Sophia.

Sophia took it, looked at it for a moment, and then took a bite.

A moment.

"--!"

Sofia puts her hands on her cheeks and is entranced.

She was so overcome with emotion that she seemed to be at a loss for words.

Satisfied with her reaction, Naoto cut his own portion and ate it.

"Oh!"

He was also impressed by the deliciousness.

“This meat is amazing, it's very fatty, but it doesn’t taste fatty, the main flavour is the meat.”

Naoto rolls the meat juice that fills his mouth onto his tongue and expresses his impressions.

Meat and fat. Both are delicious, but they are two tastes that are very difficult to exist at the same time.

Naoto remembered a time when he had eaten sirloin steak and fillet steak together only once before.

Marbled sirloin and lean filet.

Both were delicious, but both were so good that the fat and meat started fighting in his mouth.

He should have eaten them separately, Naoto thought at the time.

However, this meat tasted like a good combination of both sirloin and fillet.

“Mmm, yummy.”

“Yummy!”

As they talked, they brought the tails of the Shielius to their mouths one after another. The first one was soon gone, so the remaining portions were cut into pieces, wrapped in mud, and placed in the newly built fire.

“It smells good...”

When it was done baking, Mimi woke up.

Her eyes were half open and she looked sleepy, but she was staring at the meat and seemed to want to eat it.

“Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you.”

“Meat…”

“You want some?”

“Yup…”

For a moment, Naoto wondered if he should give her food, as she looked almost sleepy.

“Big brother…”

I was immediately taken in.

“All right, just one slice.”

“Yay”

The little girl, sleepy and overjoyed, raises her hands in the air.

Naoto cut the meat from the tail into dice steak sized pieces and put them on his plate and gave them to her.

"Delicious!!!"

Mimi's eyes snapped open as she took a bite of the meat.

She seemed to be instantly awakened by the deliciousness of the food and swallowed it with a gulp.

“Another one!”

“Guess we woke up a sleepyhead.”

Laughing happily, Naoto cut more meat and handed it to Mimi.

"Seconds"

Cut and hand over.

"Seconds!"

Cut and hand over.

"It's really delicious! Another refill!"

 cut--.

"How much do you eat!?"

"Wow ..."

Sophia's tongue wagged at Naoto, who couldn't help but gush.

The little girl had devoured the additional cooked tail meat in a matter of seconds.

The portion baked afterwards weighed almost a kilo, Naoto wondered if he himself could finish it? It was so much food that he wondered if he could fit it in the fridge, but Mimi ate it all by herself.

In response to her request, he baked more of the same, but again, Mimi ate it all by herself.

And yet—

"Seconds!"

“Sorry, it's gone. You eat a lot, though.”

The tail meat that Sophia had hunted was eaten up and only the bones remained.

Naoto was surprised at the young girl's gluttony, though.

"Ogoo..."

Immediately, it kind of made sense to him.

“Hey, big brother, I want some more.”

“No, I can't help it if I don't have any.”

“Uuuu…”

Mimi's lips quirk up, but she quickly slumps her shoulders in disappointment.

It was clear that it was actually no longer there, and she seemed disheartened by that.

It made her feel so depressed that she felt sorry for herself.

He wanted to do something for the lovely girl, but he couldn't do anything about it.

“Wait for it.”

Then he heard a slightly stuttering voice. When he turned around, he saw Sophia with an indescribably delicate look on her face.

“I'm going to hunt again.”

“Really?”

Mimi looks up at Sophia and her eyes sparkle.

The princess knight nodded silently, turned herself around, and ran off.

"Thank you, Sister!"

Mimi shouted and waved her hand.

Sophia, just before she ran off, a scowl on her face as she let out her flaming hair, but she was still very blue.

“She's a cat lover with allergies...”

Naoto somehow felt that way.

 1-5 Hell Flame

Prim's lengthy explanation began.

I listened to it all the way through, but it was quite tedious, so I'll keep it brief.

“So you're the seventh born princess of the White Pearl Kingdom, and one of the heirs to the king. So, you didn't want to fight for the succession, so you turned down the succession and left the country, but your brother or sister from the other heir tried to kill you, and they got their hands on you.”

“Yes, yes! That's right.”

“Hey, asshole! Don't summarize the princess's thankless explanation!”

“It's a long story...”

The female knight, Aishera, seems to have known Prim since she was a child.

Oh, I didn't ask that.

“Prim, how old are you?”

“What? I'm sixteen.”

“What? You're the same age. And how about you, Aishera?”

“Don't you dare call my name lightly!”

“Aishera is seventeen years old. She's only one year older than me, so she's like an older sister to me.”

“Seventeen…”

“What the hell, you got a problem with that?”

First, Prim.

She had long blond hair with a hair ornament that resembled feathers, and wore a peach-colored dress that was incongruous in the forest.

Aishera had her long black hair in a ponytail and was equipped with silver armor and a sword.

What can I say...you stand out.

“Isn't Aishera's dark hair beautiful? I asked her to grow it long, and she's been doing it for a long time.”

“I am the princess's sword... and I am ready for any kind of play.”

“Thank you. But it's annoying how you say creepy things sometimes.”

"Uh ... huh. Hey, what are you looking at?"

“I don't know... you're kind of creepy.”

“What the fuck did you say, you bastard!”

Aside from Prim, Aishera is weird.

I mean, girls... I didn't see many of them when I lived in the village. I was the only one under the tutelage of a teacher, and the other kids were under the tutelage of different sorcerers.

I asked Prim as I casted [Which way out? Delderzo].

“Prim, where are you going?”

“...I'm heading west to the Blue Sapphire Kingdom. If it's the isolated Blue Sapphire, the White Pearl Kingdom shouldn't be able to touch it. Even if they tried, they wouldn't be able to defeat the Blue Sapphire, which has the strongest naval force. Besides...”

“Besides…?”

“I have a fiancé in the Blue Sapphire Kingdom. I'm sure he'll...”

“Wow, you have a fiancé? That's amazing.”

“Well, I refused to marry him.”

“That sea monkey, he's always talking about the princess... and I'm going to take him down myself.”

“Aishera!!”

It's complicated, isn't it?

Well, it's okay.

“I'll escort you there. Umi*? I don't know what that is, but it sounds interesting.”

[*Says this in katakana]

“What? Well, if you've never been out of the sea... oh, I don't blame you if you've never been out of the sorcerer's village.”

“Yeah. I've decided that for the second time in my life, I'm going to live for myself. I want to go around the world and see things.”

“……”

Prim was looking at me as if she was looking at a dazzling object...I think.

Because of me, the sorcerers, everyone in the village may have died. But...I'm sure the teacher doesn't hold a grudge against me.

I'm sure the teacher cried when he tried to sacrifice me, and I'm sure he didn't know I was going to eat the flames of the Hell Gate.

“Hey, just tell me what you know Prim, tell me what you know about this world!”

“...Yes! If it's something me and Aishera can understand.”

“Oh, y-you mean me too?”

“Yes. We're going to be together from now on. We have to get along!”

I'm going to look around this world.

I didn't realize how difficult it would be.

◇◇◇◇◇◇

We walked for less than an hour.

“Oh, there's an exit.”

“I can't believe it. I can't believe how easy it was for us to escape from the Forest of Death, which we'll never get out of once we step into.”

Aishera is surprised, but it's not a big deal.

It's more about what we're going to do now.

“Hey, what are you doing for the night? If you want to camp out, I'll set it up.”

"Don't be stupid. There's a village near here. I'll rest there tonight."

“Village... nice. I've never been to a village outside of my hometown.”

"Fufu, Mr. Flair looks happy."

“Hey, don't call me Mr. Just say Flare.”

“But... dropping the honorifics is...”

“It's fine.”

“…Ha, yes. Flare.”

“Damn you for disgracing the princess... you better remember that.”

“No, why? Isn't it normal to call me that?”

It's surprisingly fun.

In the village, I never talked with anyone except the teacher, but this is the first time I've walked around talking with someone like this. It was fun and the conversation was lively. I don't know anyone but my teacher like this.

Then Aishera stops.

“Don't move, Princess.”

“Oh, Aishera?”

“Hey, you...”

“I know. I'll do it.”

Three little demons emerged from the bushes on the street.

I know this guy. Goblins... we used to see them near the village.

“I'll do it.”

I punched my fist in the air and decided to try it.

If the flames of hell are engraved in me... Burn.

Then, bright red flames blew out from my whole body. This is amazing, my clothes and weapons don't burn, and I don't feel any heat at all... but I can see that it's burning vigorously.

“Those are the flames of hell, the flames of the gates of hell that were said to consume the world.”

“Even fire magic can't do something like that... is he telling the truth?”

I take the [Curse Fighting] stance that I learned from my teacher.

A fighting technique that can only be used by sorcerers, in which spells are unleashed on the limbs.

If you hit with a curse on your fist, it will go through even on top of your clothes or armor. In my case, I often give the curses of 'diarrhea', 'stomach ulcer', 'internal bleeding', 'headache', and 'increased body temperature' to my extremities. There are a few other forbidden arts, but I was forbidden to use them by my teacher.

What I used on the men in the forest was "diarrhea" and "stomach ulcer. I took it easy on them, so they were cured in a few days, but it is right to use a heavier curse on these guys.

"Gagga!!"

"Let’s go"

I kicked the ground and instantly went into the goblin's pocket and punched him in the back as hard as I could.

For the second one, I crushed its face with a high kick, and for the third one, I went behind it and snapped its neck.

Four seconds... that's slow. If I did the same thing in front of my teacher, I would be sent flying. But since I hit him with fire instead of a curse, the goblin burned without a trace.

“I can't believe how fast you can go... without any magical assistance, just your physical abilities.”

“It was a good decision to hire Flare after all.”

Don't be surprised.

As for me, I wasn't serious at all.

“Okay, I'm done. I mean, it's too weak to be an experiment... let's experiment with the flame.”

The flames of Hell Gate, quite a powerful force if you can master it.

8 - Princess knight and instant ball

Late afternoon after dinner, in the camper.

Three people and a dog sitting around a kotatsu. If you cut out just that part, it looks like a wonderful scene of an ideal family: a young couple, their daughter, and their dog.

In the midst of all this, Sophia is dozing off in the sunshine coming in through the window.

Meanwhile, Mimi, who was far from sleepy, talked to Naoto while rubbing the paw of a sleeping puppy with her chin on the tatami.

“Are you going to sleep with sister too, big brother?”

“No, no, I don't know about her, but I'm more of a retirement kind of guy.”

“Re-tire?”

Mimi tilted her head to the side and looked up at Naoto.

“You're going to a place called Re-tire?”

“Retirement is not a place… it's a way of life.”

Naoto said and pointed at Sophia.

Sophia was dozing in the sunlit six-tatami room, lightly touching her sushi-lettered teacup.

It was a laid-back scene from Naoto's dream life.

“Isn't it nice and relaxing like this?”

“Yup!”

“All I needed was a cat on her lap and I'd be great.”

“Kuuun”

The sleeping puppy looked up and appealed to him with a sad face.

Why not a dog? He looked as if he was disappointed.

“haha, come here doggie”

“Woof!”

When called, he picked up the puppy that had come to him and placed only the upper half of his body on his lap.

A Shiba Inu-like puppy looking up at you with its paws in your lap and its lower jaw attached to your body.

“Yeah, dogs are unbeatable.”

“Unbeatable.”

Mimi happily repeats Naoto's lines.

Suddenly, the girl looked at Sophia and noticed something and shouted.

“Ah”

“What’s wrong?”

“Big sister's drooling.”

“Hmm?”

At Mimi's words, Naoto looked at Sophia.

Sophia was snoozing with her head bobbing and wobbling. It wasn't as exaggerated as Mimi had pointed out, but there was definitely a bit of drool coming out of the corner of her mouth.

“Well, it's warm in here.”

It's a little chilly outside, but inside the camper, the control panel says the room temperature is 23 degrees Celsius and the humidity is 50%. It's the most comfortable environment for a living room, and the sun is shining through the windows.

Naoto thought that if he took a nap there, he would probably drool a little too.

“Hey, big brother, do you have anything to wipe?”

“Here”

Naoto, who had been preparing before being asked, pulled out a hand towel from the ceiling closet and handed it to Mimi.

"Thank you!"

“Gently wipe her off. You don't want to wake her up when she's sleeping comfortably.”

"Yup!"

Mimi nodded loudly and shuffled over to Sophia's side.

Then, using a hand towel, she wiped the edge of her mouth.

"Hmm..."

Sophia twists herself, but there is no sign of waking up.

Mimi wiped more.

As Naoto was thinking that it would be better to wipe it normally, suddenly, Sophia started to grimace with her eyelids closed.

“Fufu…”

“Big sister is laughing, isn’t she?”

“I think she's having a good dream.”

“Awesome~”

“You can't talk in your sleep like that... even though it suits you.”

“So…many dogs… 101 of them…”

Sophia even started talking in her sleep, which makes the scene imaginable.

“101 doggies.”

Mimi said as she came back and returned the towel.

“That sounds like fun.”

“Yeah!”

“…101 …orange boxes”

“…That sounds like fun.”

Naoto smiled slightly and imagined a scene where all 101 puppies were in a tangerine box.

In his imagination, he pictured a scene where not only dogs but even Mimi appeared, petting and fondling each of them as they went around.

When a dog cries, she runs up to it and fluffs it up. When a different dog yelps at a distance, she runs up to it again and fluffs it up. And then another dog.

Naoto imagined such a scene.

“...could be a bit of a swoon, depending on who you ask.”

“Sw-oon?”

The Mimi of the real world tilts her head and adorably asks back.

“Swoon. It means--it's warm, it's fun, it's a lot of fun, and it's fun to have a 101 dogs.”

“Yeah, it's a lot of fun!”

Mimi nodded broadly and turned to the puppy.

“Doggie. What should I do to make more of you?”

She asked in a way that sounded like, “Where do babies come from?”

“Woof! Woof!”

“I see. I see.”

She nodded her head and looked up at Naoto.

“Hey, big brother, do you have a ball?”

“A ball?”

“Yeah, doggy says he loves balls.”

“Oh, so it’s not about increasing.”

Naoto thought they had been talking about it, but the relaxed nature of Mimi and the puppy made him smile.

The puppy talks about loving the ball, and he doesn't have to ask back what he wants to do with it.

Naoto smiled and thought for a moment, "A ball..."

“Hold on a second.”

“Yeah!”

Naoto squeezed the hand towel that Mimi had just used to wipe off the drool and rolled it up. Then he took a piece of packing twine from the storeroom and used it to tie it tightly.

The instant ball was ready.

“I don't have a proper one, but it'll do.”

“Woof!”

“Throw it fast, he said.”

“Hahaha. Even I could see that one.”

Mimi translates for the puppy, whose innocent eyes sparkle.

Smiling back at the one and the other, Naoto stood up and opened the back porch.

Sitting on the edge, watching the puppy with its tails swinging wildly.

“Let's go, doggie… fetch!”

Naoto sat on the edge and threw the towel-ball.

“Woof!”

“Yay!”

Chasing the flying ball, the eager puppy started to run, and at the same time, Mimi ran with him, overjoyed.

“Oh-”

The puppy and Mimi, together, chase after the ball. Naoto's eyes lowered as he watched the scene.

Eventually, the puppy returned with a towel-ball in its mouth, and Mimi followed behind him with a smile on her face.

“I'm losing. One more time, big brother.”

“All right… fetch!”

The ball was received and thrown again. In the same way, one person and one animal chased after it.

This time, Mimi took the ball, came back and offered it to Naoto with a big smile on her face.

“I won.”

“That's good. You want to go again?”

“Yup!”

“Woof!”

Naoto sat on the edge and kept throwing the ball.

Sometimes it was caught by the puppy, sometimes by Mimi.

The scene was too tranquil to be described as a back-and-forth battle.

They picked up the ball, he took it and threw it again.

In the late afternoon after lunch, Naoto got together with the girl and the puppy and played with them.

“Yippee!”

The ball was thrown hard, but instead of dropping to the ground, it was caught in midair by a head-sliding Mimi.

With that momentum, she slid to the ground with a thud.

“Caught it!”

Mimi held the ball up high in her hand, and the puppy jumped on it.

“Kyahaha, it’s not good doogie, its mine.”

“Woof! Woof! ♪”

“Ogogo! ♪”

One and another were rolling around on the ground, jostling each other.

After a while, Mimi stood up and said, "Here doggie!” and handed the ball to the puppy, and came back to the edge with it.

"It was fun"

“Woof!”

“I see. You know, big brother, the doggy is hungry.”

“Ahahah, I bet it’s you who’s hungry.”

“Yeah! I'm hungry too.”

“Then I'll prepare a snack for you, and you can wait quietly in the kotatsu.”

“Yup!”

“Woof!”

The two of them and one animal climbed up from the porch and went back into the room.

“Ah-”

Suddenly, Naoto chuckled and turned to Mimi.

“What happened today? Don't tell your sister.”

He put his index finger to his lips.

“Don't tell, why?”

“Because I pity her.”

With a bitter smile, he looked at the kotatsu in the six-mat Japanese-style room.

The puppy was playing happily in the afternoon.

Sophia, who had been taken by the sunny weather, did not wake up until the end of the day.

Ignorance is bliss, Naoto thought.
